Lead with Confidence

If you're ready to take your field experience to the next level, the BPI Crew Leader certification puts you in the driver’s seat. This nationally recognized credential shows you’ve got what it takes to lead weatherization and home performance crews with confidence, safety, and skill.

As a certified Crew Leader, you're not just getting the job done - you’re managing people, solving problems, and making real impact on occupant health, comfort, and energy efficiency. Whether you're overseeing insulation work, ensuring safety protocols, or communicating with clients, this certification proves you’re prepared to lead from the front.

Prerequisites

Certain education and experience are required prior to taking certification exams. Please review the Prerequisites for Crew Leaders.

How to Become
Certified

Exam Information

Online exam: 100 multiple choice questions
Time limit: 2 hours
Passing score: 75%, 69% or higher
(depending on exam)

Field Exam: Field portion and online exam
Time limit: 3.5 hours (field) and 1 hour (online)
Passing Score: 78% (field total)

The field component includes three (3) distinct props on which candidates will complete work. The proctor will depressurize two (2) of the props by approximately 75 Pa. These depressurized props are for single attempt only. Any sign of smoke movement within the prop will indicate a failure on the prop, however, not necessarily on the entire field exam.

Recertification

BPI Crew Leaders must recertify every three (3) years; take the exams again or submit at least 24 BPI Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over the course of the time you are certified to bypass the online exam. All candidates must retake the two-part field exam and must also re-attest to the Code of Ethics.

Please review the Certification Renewal Policies and fill out the Application for Certification Renewal.
