Build Efficiency from the Ground Up

Backed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and NREL, this certification proves you have the skills to properly install energy-saving upgrades - from air sealing and ductwork to insulation and ventilation - in single-family homes and small multifamily buildings. Earn your credential and show clients, employers, and programs that you're trained, tested, and ready to raise the standard.

Prerequisites

Candidates must meet certain prerequisites prior to taking the online exam. Please review the Prerequisites for the Retrofit Installer Technician.

How to Become
Certified

Exam Information

Online exam: 50 multiple choice questions
Time limit: 2 hours
Passing score: 76% or 75% or higher
(depending on form of exam)

Field Exam: Hands-on
Time limit: 4 hours
Passing Score: 87% or higher (field total)

The field component includes seven (7) distinct props on which candidates will complete work. The proctor will depressurize three (3) of the props by approximately 75 Pa. These depressurized props are for single attempt only. Any sign of smoke movement within the prop will indicate a failure on the prop, however, not necessarily on the entire field exam.

Exam Fees: Exam prices are set by BPI Test Centers. Find your local BPI Test Center to learn more.

Recertification

BPI Retrofit Installer Technicians must recertify every three (3) years; take the online exam again or bypass by submitting at least 30 BPI Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over the course of the time you were certified. All candidates must retake the field exam.

Please review the Certification Renewal Policies and fill out the Application for Certification Renewal.
